According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation SA (HSF) up to 70% of women and a third of men are now being classified as overweight or obese. A staggering 40% of women in our country are obese, which means they have a body mass index greater than 30 kg/m2. However, this is no longer just an adult problem, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 5 boys between the ages of 2 – 14 years are overweight or obese.
Obesity is associated with a number of diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, hypertension (high blood pressure), joint pain and certain cancers.
ON THE WHOLE, IT IS CLEAR THAT SOUTH AFRICANS MODERN RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD IS A FAR FROM HEALTHY ONE.
In fact, our unhealthy eating habits have become a vicious cycle for most!
First, we become unhealthy because eating healthy food and exercising feels uncomfortable and like to much work, we are way too tired to even think about preparing a healthy meal never mind eating it, so we opt for comfort food and mindless TV watching instead. Unbeknown to us the unhealthy easy foods we eat actually contributes to our constant state of fatigue and in some case even depression, and we feel even more uncomfortable, because we don’t fit into our clothes, we struggle to move with ease, strength and energy, so we seek to distract ourselves from the reality of our unhealthy bodies by eating more unhealthy food and watching more unhealthy entertainment and drinking more alcohol. And our discomfort just gets worse and worse and worse.
